Some students have been supported throughout primary and/or secondary education by Speech and Language Therapy to enable them to access the curriculum and interact with their peers.
On progression to Further Education Colleges some of these students may require additional support in order to access the College curriculum, participate and contribute to the community and make the transition to work, Higher Education and/or Adult Services. Students supported include those with a wide range of communication, cognitive and swallowing difficulties.
Currently there are four Specialist Speech and Language Therapists supporting students and staff at Berkshire College of Agriculture (BCA), Amersham and Wycombe College and Aylesbury College. We offer input to students within the mainstream college, foundation level and life skills centres.
We work closely with staff, students, health professionals, support agencies and parents to enable students to use strategies to manage difficulties with increased independence. The main focus of therapy is on functional communication skills such as asking for a drink on a cafe, accessing information and interview skills. We offer training, advice, joint target setting, group therapy and modelling of strategies.
