School Aged Complex Needs Team
Our team of specialist Speech and Language Therapists have specific training working with children and young people ageing from 5 years to 25 years with complex health and communication needs. We assess and support children within mainstream schools, special schools and specialist settings known as Additionally Resourced Provision (ARPs) for children with physical disabilities to maximise opportunities to develop effective, functional, communication within the context of their complex needs.
We encourage the child or young person’s communication skills and access to the curriculum through using spoken language, signing, symbols, visual timetables and topic boards as appropriate. In addition we support the use of ICT to access the curriculum as appropriate. We also support children and young people who find communicating verbally difficult by identifying augmentative, alternative communication systems (AAC). These are personalised for each individual’s current needs.
We work with children with different types of complex medical needs including; motor disorders, epilepsy, visual impairment, acquired brain injury, degenerative conditions and many other syndromes and disorders. Within all settings we work within a multi disciplinary team including class teachers, support assistants, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Paediatricians, dieticians Specialist Teachers and any other professionals that may be involved with your child. We also work alongside other members of our own service for example therapists specialising in hearing impairment.
Members of our team are involved in the process of assessing children who may benefit from using ICT to access the curriculum. This is co-ordinated by the Bucks Learning Trust Specialist Teaching Service (www.learningtrust.net).
